Tyler Carson - Violinist, Composer, Producer, and Integrative Energy Healer
A lifetime musician with 35 years of daily connection to his violin, Tyler's attunement and expression of "Living Music" can only be described as transcendental. Growing up trained as a classical violinist (solo artist with the Victoria Symphony age 13) and a folk 'fiddler' simultaneously (CBS Jerry Lewis Telethon, festival mainstages, Thailand, Japan, Cayman Island, ZDF Germany), Tyler was always on a unique path. Today he redefines expectation of what the violin and indeed what music itself can do. "I've never felt that music came from me; it always felt like music came through me." In Tyler's hands a solo violin is a full band. After losing the ability to sing and even speak normally, a major turning point came from his first ever solo performance given by special invitation in Auroville, India. Since then Tyler has expanded to integrate spiritual music inside original adaptation of cover songs that are at once familiar and immediately new. As always, he creates and performs in his signature combustible style that compels his audience heart first, into the music.

What is Living Music?
Can you remember a moment when everything just ‘clicked’ and it all made sense?
Or when you had an idea come to you that finally expressed what you had always been trying to say?
This is very much like the moment when a musician begins to write a song. It is when inspiration reaches through our busy mind and comes to the forefront. Now imagine if a musician were to always make music from that place of inspiration! How do you think that might sound? How would it feel?
As Tyler Carson completed his certificate in Integrative Energy Healing at Langara University, he identified that the moment of inspiration could be extended. It can be described similarly to a state of meditation. If one can clear one’s mind and connect to the source of inspiration, there is an opportunity to communicate directly through the heart. This is often found in artistic pursuit, but usually somewhat fleetingly. Through this exploration Tyler discovered that solo violin could make music that is truly engaging and captivating ~ all on its own. Furthermore, it is a technique which can be extended between collaborators if they too can enter into this deep place.
"First the music enters us. Then if the music enters you, you don’t have to worry so much about what to play; the music's telling you what to play."
~Gary Peacock jazz bassist (Keith Jarrett's Improv Trio)
Humans are built on vibration. Every little atom, proton, electron and quark is constantly in motion. It could be said that we ARE sound! As a result, experiencing Living Music has an effect that is uniquely powerful and moving.

Tyler Carson ~
Traveling to far away lands and defining his musical landscape in studio, Tyler Carson has discovered a new sound for the violin. Tyler credits his varied upbringing for providing him with a unique perspective which he has utilized in developing his unique way of making music.
Growing up, Tyler studied music along with and with equal attention to other pursuits such as downhill skiing in which he was highly ranked as a racer, golfing in which he competed with the top 150 players 14 and under in North America and recently his studies as an Integrative Energy Healer which brought tremendous context to his music making and unusual experiences on stage since the age of 7.
His early performing career included being a member of the Young Canadians at age 7, for two years performing nightly at the world famous Calgary Stampede to 10,000 people as a singer and dancer. In 1994 he performed with the BC Fiddle Orchestra mainstage at the Commonwealth Games to over 60,000 people live and international TV. With his sister he began busking on local downtown streets and from business cards handed out there grew from local gigs to soloing with the Victoria Symphony, performing on many international TV features including the Jerry Lewis Telethon Hollywood as well as performing in Japan, Thailand, The Cayman Islands and New Zealand. During this time he shared the stage with The Chieftains, Ashley MacIsaac, The Irish Rovers and opened for The Crash Test Dummies and Brooks and Dunn and was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada all before the end of his teens. With his sister he released several albums and was poised on a career in country music as a multi-instrumentalist and singer when his career made a sweeping change in direction.
In his 20’s Tyler was diagnosed with a vocal condition called spasmodic dysphonia. A Focal Dystonia affecting his voice, Tyler at first had difficulty singing and within a few years had to abandon entirely his burgeoning career as a singer songwriter. Tyler considers this a profound gift as he refocused and doubled his attention on his violin and fiddle playing. He spent the next 10 years playing with and leading many bands in genres including bluegrass, celtic, gypsy-jazz, rock, pop and classical. In addition to cutting his teeth in pubs and local festivals, Tyler traveled regularly to Los Angeles where he studied voice with Seth Riggs and Speech Level Singing famous for supporting Michael Jackson on his Thriller tour and many other international stars including several Metropolitan Opera winners. He also spent time with friend Craig Else (Petit Cheval) hanging out in the inner circles of the LA music scene and during the day lifting Steve Morse and Dixie Dreggs tunes, complex fusion music of the 70s the like of which Tyler had never known. Tyler’s horizons were opening quickly and before leaving LA he had recorded with DH Peligro (The Dead Kennedys, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and on soundtrack to feature film ‘Live!’ starring Eva Mendes. These experiences gave Tyler insight into the reality of commercial music and stardom.
At the age of 25 a number of life changes came to a head and Tyler experienced debilitating panic and anxiety. Unable to work steadily for over a year he spent a great deal of time working with meditation and discovering a deeper connection to himself. In the end, a quote by Jack Kornfield best describes his experience, “All too often in western society, experiences labeled mental illness are actually spiritual awakenings.” Through meditation and studies in Energy Healing, Tyler discovered ways to be with anxiety while continuing with his musical dreams. Each deeply personal aspect began to inform the other and Tyler took his new musical vocabularies and traveled to England.
In England he discovered a culture that supported and understood instrumental music in a way he had never seen before, which was likely due to the deep history of folk music that permeates the UK. And thus while still unable to sing, he became further inspired to find what he could do with his violin. Musical projects became more creative first with his UK duo, Jack Maple and then with Seattle based duo, Impossible Bird. He began to pair his new found skills in meditation to explore what could be communicated through his violin alone. Like an idea that comes and goes over the period of months and years, a new way of playing began to emerge.
His meditation practice continued to grow and it became integral to the final leap of his musical development which occurred during a month long adventure in southern India, where he had traveled to complete his college certification as an Integrative Energy Healer. During this trip he was given the honour of being invited to perform a solo concert in a spiritual community called Auroville. He had never performed a solo concert of original music and indeed did not even have enough music prepared to do so, but he surprised even himself by setting aside his fear and agreed to the performance! Perhaps it was due to the influence of being in a culture so profoundly different from his own, that during his musical composition time in India he began to take chances and play in a way he had almost not realized was possible or at least had never allowed himself to try at home. Amazingly after so many years it was while composing alone in a sweaty and mosquito filled practice room that he was struck by a moment of deep personal non-judgement that would provide the key to a completely new way of expressing himself musically, through solo violin performance. The concert was a tremendous success and was featured on Auroville radio along with an hour long 'artist spotlight' interview. The recording of the performance became his debut solo violin album, Living Violin.
Returning home to Seattle, WA he began to play his new solo music first as a featured soloist with the Seattle Rock Orchestra and then with his own band, Impossible Bird. Several months later during that summer, Impossible Bird was offered what at first seemed to be a dream record deal. As this offer combined with a growing following and praise from industry insiders, it was clear that Impossible Bird was building momentum. However, when contracts were drawn the label’s offer did not support the creative integrity of the band and they chose to remain independent. Then suddenly and seemingly out of the blue, Impossible Bird disbanded shortly thereafter. It was a shocking turn of events for Tyler who had committed himself to the project by moving countries and devoting over two years to managing and developing the band and yet another deep personal and professional setback. At the peak of a summer gig season, all shows were canceled and everything changed.
As Tyler pondered his next step, his attention fell to the new solo violin project that had been simmering since India five months earlier. Thus far it was only a footnote in his North American concerts and perhaps now it was time to make it the focus. He wondered, could he create a mainstream concert with material from his spiritual time in India? With that another major push into new territory accelerated Tyler’s artistic exploration and the following eight months of performing and writing coalesced into a sound and artistic expression that Tyler could truly call his own. It brought his soulful spiritual music into combination with his trademark combustible stage energy and became, Living Music. Furthermore it cemented a personal relationship with his partner at the time Maya who had been touring and supporting Tyler with Impossible Bird and now his new solo project, Living Music. His artistic relationship with Maya also grew to unveil a creative chemistry and unique combination of improvisational movement paired to Living Music that became a fabulously unique 'musical' duet!
For Tyler, making the transition into this new expression called Living Music required every piece of skill and experience he had acquired throughout his life: along with a healthy dose of ‘no other choice’ instilled by the loss of his voice and many musical disappointments of projects almost succeeding, but ultimately dissolving. Having been through this gauntlet he believes that every person is equipped to make their own leap into their 'calling' based on the experiences that their life path have led them through. Based on his experience, the key is to follow a thread of what inspires you (hint, it wasn't music for him - it was human connection!) and then to learn with support that obstacles are actually opportunities to move you forward. And perhaps it doesn’t need to be as tumultuous a process as what he experienced. Support is key and from the feedback he had received from audiences, he has discovered that his new way of playing inspires people in their own creative life be it in the arts, education, business or anything else. It seems that listening to Living Music and discovering its principles can support that experience for each person, in every audience. Tyler deeply believes in the power of music and its profoundly important role in building community and a supportive culture that allows us all to follow our hearts and bring our dreams to fruition.

Adam Dobres ~
Canadian born Adam Dobres is a natural born guitarist with a sensitive ability to embody any style of music. His love of the guitar began at 12 years of age, when his father brought home a guitar from the local thrift shop. Adam took to the guitar like a duck to water. Although he is classically trained, Adam thrives in exploring any style of music his heart desires. Adam is like a guitar chameleon- he fully embodies the energy and spirit of whatever music he playing.
While still in High School, Adam joined an 18 piece Jazz Big Band where his ear for musical arrangement and production grew at a fast pace. From this, he went on to study jazz guitar at college where he discovered one of his guitar heroes, the late Lenny Breau. Adam, obsessed with the magic of Lenny Breau's guitar playing, spent endless hours lifting solos of his old jazz recordings. After college Adam embarked on his first tour with members of Scruj MacDuhk; Ruth Moody (Now with the Wailing Jennys), Oliver Swain, and Jeremy Penner. They travelled south to Louisiana where the intoxicating music of the bayou struck a deep chord in Adams soul. This was a life changing moment where Adam understood how music can express the flavours of culture.
With a new taste for experimenting with his personal style and thriving on touring, Adam embarked on living his dream. From playing Celtic music with some of Canada’s finest fiddle players including Daniel Lapp and Pierre Schryer, Adam has branched out to Pop Rock with Toni Childs, Bluegrass, Old Time string music, Jazz, Klezmer, Rock and Roll and to jamming with other musicians playing exotic instruments such as the Sitar, Turkish Lira and African Kora. Adam has toured the world with many different projects including touring North America with Old Time string band Outlaw Social and supported Kendel Carson on her European tour. Adam has also toured with Beat-Poet Cowboy Ridley Bent and recorded on his two albums (one which won 7 BCCMA awards). More recently, from 2007-2011 Adam has been recording and touring extensively with Emmy winner and two time Grammy nominee, singer Toni Childs. On one tour with Toni Childs, they opened for the legendary Jackson Browne. Adam was also part of The Dustin Bentall outfit where they performed as part of the 2010 Winter Olympics and supported Blue Rodeo on their 2010 Canadian tour.
In 2011, Adam stepped back into his past and roots and joined the Ruth Moody Band. Taking a hiatus from The Wailin Jennys, Moody has embarked on a growingly successful solo career. So far the band has travelled to Europe and extensively throughout Canada and the US. They are currently in the studio working on a new album.
Throughout Adam’s career he has grown to love the recording process and even doing some producing himself. Adam was thrilled to be musical engineer and producer for an important and meaningful project with childhood family friend Sarah Van Borek in creating the "One Voice" video. The video was created as part of the SFU Public Square "Alone Together" conference focused on bridging the gap of cultural isolation and disconnection within the Vancouver community.
Whatever project Adam involves himself in, he strives to express his love of music and the mystery of life through his guitar playing. His energetic, creative solo's always leave the crowd happily stunned. Adam feels the reason why he explores so many different styles and textures of music, is because music is a universal language that can bridge any culture. Humble and shy by nature, the guitar has become Adam’s voice to deliver his purpose in life- to reach out to others and uplift their spirits by reminding them of the beauty and wonder of life. "Through music we all speak the same language and it’s the language of our hearts."
